Overview
Stack Internal uses subject matter expert (SME) validation to ensure answers are correct, current, and relevant. The Validation Requests API endpoint allows you to retrieve completed validations and their supporting source documents. You can use the results to update original sources or inform new content.
The API doesn't create validation requests, assign them to subject matter experts, or replace the review experience. Instead, you'll use the API after an SME completes a validation to retrieve the result.
API endpoint
For full details about the API Validation Requests endpoint including request and response details, filters, pagination behavior, and the current schema, read the Validation Requests API reference.
You'll access the API Validation Requests endpoint here:
https://api.stackinternal.com/v1/validation-requests/search
Use this endpoint to find completed validations in your organization that have one or more saved external source documents. The API returns results from oldest to newest.
Each result can include:
- Validation request and attempt identifiers.
- Status and lifecycle timestamps.
- Topic, question, original suggested answer, and approved or saved edited answer.
- Source document metadata, including source system, title, URL, author, and date.
- Routing and SME verification details.
Use since, sourceType, sme, and topicName to narrow the results. Use pageSize to set the number of results to return. If the response contains nextCursor, send it as cursor with the same filters to get the next page.
When you use validatedAnswer to update or create content, keep any returned sourceDocuments data with it. This lets you trace the validated answer to the source documents included in the API response.
Connect to the API
To connect, create an OAuth app, then get an access token. Send the token in the Authorization header with each request. Use only the scopes assigned to the app, and don't include access tokens in URLs.
For OAuth registration and the complete production-ready connection flow, read The Stack Internal API.
For a short-lived test connection, read the Stack Internal API Quick Connect Guide.
Example request
The example below uses a curl call to access the API with the following filters:
sincesourceTypesmetopicNamepageSize
curl "https://api.stackinternal.com/v1/validation-requests/search?since=2026-10-01T00:00:00Z&sourceType=slack&sme=JSmith&topicName=Authentication&pageSize=50" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer [access_token]"
For workspaces hosted in the EU, use https://api.eu.stackinternal.com.
The API is currently in alpha, so review the API reference before implementing or updating an integration.
